Gloxinia Basics

Gloxinias create a striking disiplay with their surprising colors and soft, velvety leaves

The gloxinias we see most are often are not a "true" species at all. Known as "florist's gloxinia" (Sinningia speciosa), they are related to African violets. These are perennials that originate from tubers (true gloxinias do not).

While gloxinias are a bit fussy about their habitat, it is well worth the effort when the big velvety leaves and blooms begin to show. In fact, they react to any type of stress rather poorly, so care must be taken with regard to watering and fertilization.

Location is also important - typically a sunny spot with indirect light. They love warmth, ranging from 65 degrees (night) to 75 degrees (day). Lower temperatures will cause brittle leaves. When not in bloom, the plant will be fine in the 40-50 degree range. The soil must remain moist but not soaked or root rot will occur. They will do best in a humid environment - a water/gravel tray under the pot will work well. However, avoid getting water or soil on the leaves.

Containers should be wider than they are deep. Use soil suited for African violets. If you purchase seeds, the blooms will produce a wide variety of colors. Cuttings will be identical to the parent plant. Either is easy to do. Seeds can be started in one pot and then divided. (Cover with plastic for germination.) A single, healthy leaf attached to the main stem can be cut and placed in sand or water. Roots will soon form and then a tuber will develop. They will begin to bloom about two months following planting as a tuber and six months when started from seed.

At the end of the blooming season, the leaves will begin to yellow. Cut them back and place the pot in a cool, dark spot. Keep it semi-moist until new leaves begin to sprout. Repot with fresh soil and your gloxinias will return.

Gloxinias are now available all year and can be purchased reliably from online retailers. You can also order gloxinias in full bloom from florists. They make terrific gifts for avid home growers.
