How to Care for Heirloom or Special Fabrics

Heirloom linens and other keepsake fabrics require special treatment while cleaning and for storing

You may have just received a set of hand-embroidered pillowcases from a favorite aunt or perhaps a doily from your great-grandmother. How do you care for these so they will last for many decades?

Always use the right product for the type of material you are cleaning. Try to spot clean when possible; first with water and blotting. Hand washing is second best with a mild cleanser that has no additives. Products containing enzymes should never be used on silks and wool.

If a product is fairly substantial, you can also place it in a nylon mesh bag and put in the washing machine on gentle cycle.

Lace and embroidery should be hand washed. Excess water can be removed by laying flat on an absorbent towel and rolling. Then, let the piece air dry, flat and away from sunlight. If you must iron an embroidered piece, do it on the reverse side. The same process applies to silk.

If you choose to store your special heirloom items, never use starch. It is a bug attractant. Try to maintain constant temperature and humidity settings; 65 degrees and 50% humidity are often recommended at the high end.

Never store any fabric in plastic. Avoid cardboard boxes as well. Fold the item and, if possible, use acid-free tissue paper to place in the folds. You can then place it in on old pillowcase or wrap it in a cotton sheet. A cedar chest is nice, but do not let the actual fabric come in touch with the wood. Do not use mothballs - they are dangerous to kids and pets.

For display purposes, provide protection from dust and other airborne grime with a barrier of some type. Glass cabinets or display cases are ideal. If you wish to frame and hang a special item, be sure that it is not touching the glass and is not truly airtight.

These tips will give you the basics for cleaning and caring for special keepsakes. To avoid any potential damage to valuable pieces, however, you should always consult a professional before attempting any process yourself.
