Not too long ago, a prostate cancer diagnosis was a possible death sentence. By the time of detection, the cancer had usually progressed too far. It was also labeled as an "old man's disease" and many men died from other causes before the cancerous prostate gland caught up with them. Those who underwent treatments did not generally enjoy a continued quality of life.

The advent of the PSA (prostate specific antigen) test in 1991, brought prostate cancer to the forefront. For many, testing begins as early as age 40 and a surprising number of cases are now being diagnosed and treated.

In fact, current U.S. statistics indicate that:
-One out of ten men will be diagnosed.
-Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer found in men (behind lung cancer).
-If diagnosed early, prostate cancer is curable.

Many options exist for treatment, including surgery (prostatectomy) and radiation, of which many variations exist. The latest surgical techniques also leave many prostate cancer survivors with full or nearly perfect continence and sexual functions. This depends on the extent of the cancer and the individual, of course.

In this section, we'll discuss our experiences with prostate cancer and what we've learned. We're not medical experts, just dedicated to discussing our personal treatment options and encouraging everyone to gain the knowledge necessary to make informed decisions.
